  1. Meet some of Brewin Dolphin's apprentices

Wealth Manager Brewin Dolphin are supporting both new starters and existing staff to develop and learn at every stage of their career through a professional apprenticeship programme.

The program is delivered in partnership with EdTech start-up Multiverse.

55 apprentices are developing skills in areas such as data analytics, project management and business administration - with the support of one-to-one coaching from industry experts.

New polling commissioned by Multiverse has revealed that 47% of UK workers have not done any workplace training in the last five years - and more than two fifths would like to do more. The approach from Brewin Dolphin shows a commitment to creating a culture of learning and supporting its people at every stage of their career.

The training in data has also developed new competencies in the team - saving the business time and money. A survey of apprentices found that apprentices were, on average, 11% more effective in their use of data since the programme began last year.

Clive Mawdesley, Chief Data Analytics Officer at Brewin Dolphin, said: “The Data Fellowship is a key part of our strategy to strengthen the data culture at Brewin. Through this programme we are raising the levels of skills and awareness of analytical methods in a wide range of business teams. This will create a network of experts, who can share best practice and enable us to get greater value from our data."

Jackie Overington, Learning & Development Partner at Brewin Dolphin, said: "Apprenticeships provide an opportunity to build a diverse pipeline of talent at Brewin, as well as upskilling employees for the skills needed both now and in the future. We all learn in different ways and the focus on applied learning on the job provides more opportunities for more people to develop their career."

Training is delivered by Multiverse, a startup tech company building an outstanding alternative to university and corporate training through apprenticeships. The company announced the closing of a $130 million Series C funding round earlier this year and now trains over 5,000 tech, leadership and digital apprentices.

Multiverse matches talented individuals with careers and delivers world-class training in a wide range of qualifications in leadership, digital and technology. Apprentices benefit from one-to-one coaching with an industry expert and are supported by a thriving community with events, socials, mentoring and leadership programmes designed to exceed the best of the university experience.

Jeremy Duggan, president at Multiverse, said: “The effective use of data is essential to business success - and Brewin Dolphin is leveraging apprenticeships to boost those skills in-house.

"Not only is apprenticeship training supporting those existing staff to develop their skills, but the company is also attracting young talent from diverse backgrounds with heaps of potential."

Meet some of Brewin Dolphin's apprentices

Karl Hassall is a Senior Data Analyst at Brewin Dolphin. He enrolled on the Data Analytics apprenticeship programme in July 2021, to learn more about data science - an area he hadn’t worked in before.

“My apprenticeship has enabled me to come together with people from across the business and break down some of the barriers and silos that might have existed before. I get to learn from others, and showcase some of the stuff we’re working on in my areas.

I’ve spent a lot of time in data but not Big Data and tools like Machine Learning. There’s a lot in that area that I was unfamiliar with before this programme. The world’s changing, and it’s important to keep up so I was really pleased to be able to enrol on this programme and get a couple of steps ahead.

This is my first time doing any sort of training programme. The support I've had from the team around me has been excellent. I’ve been really impressed with Brewin Dolphin’s approach - not many companies would give you time to learn on the job.”

Ellie Manthorp is 19 from Essex, and enrolled on the Business Administration programme in July 2021, after studying at college.

“When I was at college, I knew that university wasn’t something I ever wanted to do. I did enjoy learning, but I really wanted to start working. An apprenticeship gives me the opportunity to both learn and work at the same time. It’s the best of both worlds.

On the programme I've learnt so much that I knew nothing about before. It has boosted my confidence in a lot of different areas. And it’s taught me how to handle myself in the workplace, and skills that I’m applying to everything I do.

Having my coach always there is my favourite thing about the Multiverse approach. I can ask her questions that are related to things happening at work - even if they’re not about what we’re studying that day. If I need an external opinion, I have that support system. My coach pushes me and she wants me to do well - she really does care.”
